A Pop-up Pantry for South African TV Show: The Ultimate Braai Master

Cooked in Africa Films is a South African production company and the creators of the award-winning local series, The Ultimate Braai Master. From the humble beginnings of season 1 to the soon-to-be-released season 6, The Ultimate Braai Master now airs across the globe.

Made for South Africans by South Africans, the programme showcases the many uniquely-beautiful things about South Africa. From the landscapes to the people and their incredible abilities – like cooking on the open flame (called a braai in South Africa). The aim of the show was to bring people from all walks of life together all in the name of a braai.

The host and creative director of The Ultimate Braai Master, Justin Bonello, relies on stretch tent rental for the pop-up pantry for the upcoming season. It is so exciting to see stretch tents on this show. After all, braaing is the quintessential South African past time.

Stretch tents have enjoyed tremendous growth in popularity in recent years, and South Africa’s burgeoning film industry played an important role in highlighting how stretch tents could and did, change the game for production companies.

With complex logistical requirements, such as multiple set locations, stretch tents offer numerous benefits for production companies.

Why stretch tents work for the TV industry

Stretch tents have compact dimensions that allow for easy transportation.

Setting them up requires a small rigging crew and minimal set-up and break-down time compared to other tents, like marquees.

Stretch tents have the ability to adapt to almost any environment, so they can be rigged in the most remote of sets.

These are just some of the reasons why production companies like Cooked in Africa Films opted for a stretch tent for their catering kitchen. Not to mention the fact that they make a striking impression when dressing for the camera!

Justin Bonello concluded the project with the following:

“We always try and make a natural-fitting pantry in the diverse location that we film in for The Ultimate Braai Master. The stretch tent was our version of a pop-up pantry that we could dress to suit both the environment and the challenge. Versatile. Easy to set up. Natural fitting. All really important consideration when you’re filming in a new location every two days. The tents will now form part of every season we film.”

How To Care for Your Stretch Tent to Make it Last

If you run a stretch tent rental business, taking proper care of your tent should be
top of mind if you aim to increase its lifespan, and ultimately maximise your
investment. A Cape Town-based wedding venue; has proven the efficacy of stretch
tent care: Their stretch tent has been used for over 130 weddings and still looks
dashing.

Four key components of stretch tent care:

1. Keep your tent clean using groundsheets.
2. Administer care during setup and breakdown.
3. Adhere to general maintenance and storing guidelines.
4. Keep rigging equipment in good working order.

1. Keeping Your Tent Clean

- To prevent your tent from picking up dirt, lay groundsheets underneaththe tent during setup and breakdown.Your rigging team should always use clean groundsheets.
- Groundsheets should be clearly marked which side is down (that comes
into contact with the ground) and which side is up (the clean side).
- Ensure that all pole tops that will be in contact with the fabric are wiped
clean before every setup.

2. Administering Care During Setup and Breakdown

- Before laying down the groundsheet, ensure that there are no sharp objects that could pierce through both the groundsheet and the stretch tent membrane.
- Ensure that there are no overhead threats (like tree branches) that could pierce or damage the tent when the long central poles are inserted.
- Handle the tent membranes on the edges of the tent.
- Refrain from walking over the tent when it’s flat on the ground.
- Prior to breaking down, make sure there is no broken glass or other “threats” left behind from the function.

3. Adhering to General Maintenance and Storing

- Before taking down the tent down, take note of cleaning or maintenance that needs to be done before the next rental cycle.
- Spot clean bird droppings from the topside of the tent.
- Follow the correct cleaning guidelines when cleaning your tent and refrain from using harsh cleaning agents.
- Specific attention should be paid to all lug attachment points to ensure they will not fail and potentially cause damage to the tent.
- If a tent is dirty and wet when removed from site, clean and air dry the tent as soon as possible thereafter.
- When on- and off-loading your tent from the transport vehicle, ensure that there are no threats that could damage the tent.
- Always store your tent in a dust bag and heavy duty PVC bag and ensure tents are bone dry before they get packed away.

4. Keeping Rigging Equipment in Good Working Order

- Pay careful attention to the components that are critical to the structure of the tent. Rigging equipment failure, particularly in high winds, could cause the tent to flap and tear on nearby threats.
- All ropes should be checked for fraying after a rental cycle.
- All stakes / pegs should be checked to ensure that they are straight.
- All poles should be checked for kinking or bowing.

All you need to know about marquees

Hiring a marquee is expensive and for most people an unfamiliar experience. Below, we attempt to help you answer some basic questions about marquees that we hope will help you decide if a marquee is the right option for you.
1. How much does it cost to hire a marquee?
How long is a piece of string?
The prices for marquee tents vary and  working out how much your marquee will cost isn't totally straightforward.
  • The quickest way to get an rough idea of prices is to use our online marquee quote. It is fast and accurate, and includes common extras. You can print or email yourself quotes with no obligation.
  • Another simple way is to use the typical cost of a marquee per person.
So pick a number that seems about right for the sort of marquee you want and then multiply that by the number of guests you expect. That will give you a rough idea of the cost of a marquee.
  • A more accurate method is to measure your site or work out how big a marquee you need (see next question). You can then enquire about the pricing from Tentickle Stretch Tents. You will then need to add furniture and accessories on top of that.
2. How big a marquee do I need?
The answer depends on a number of factors:
  • How many guests you are expecting
  • Any extras - typically dance floors or tables to serve food
  • Whether you would like extra space for milling about
Armed with these facts, you can work out your space requirements in a number of ways:
  • Price list: use a price list that shows the approximate guest capacities for seated and buffet events for all the sizes and types of marquees.
  • Rendered planning: use a 3D drawing service that will render the perfect layout, tent size etc. based on your venue and event needs.
  • Work it out:
    • For a buffet event you will need a minimum of 8 square feet per person
    • For a seated event you will need a minimum of 15 square feet per person
    • Then you will need to add on space for extras like dance floors
3. How does the marquee hire process work?
Hiring a marquee from a marquee tents company is simple.
  • If you would like one, such companies often offer free no-obligation site visits where they will inspect and measure your site, and offer suggestions to help achieve the type of marquee, size, layout, and look that you want.
  • Following a confirmed booking, they will contact you before the event to arrange dates for putting up and taking down. Normally, they put up a marquee a few days before your event, and dismantle it a few days after.
  • They put up the marquee. How long put-up takes depends on the size of the marquee. In most cases, it will take less than a day. Larger marquees may take two days or even more.
  • After the event, they take down the marquee and ensure that the site is left clean and tidy. Typically, this will take less than a day.
4. Will you make a mess of my garden?
Reputable tent hire companies have a fantastic team of trained marquee erectors who all know how important it is to leave a site clean and tidy.
5. What sort of marquee do I need?
Here are some of the types of marquees you can hire:
  • Frame marquees: rectangular shaped tents that need no extra space around them so they are good for smaller spaces and as an extension to a building. They can also be combined for flexible space planning. Frame marquees have no inner poles so sight lines are great.
  • Traditional marquees: pretty tents with curved tops and inner poles. Need more space around them so require slightly larger venues.
  • Chinese hat marquees: Attractive pointy-topped tents, with a maximum size of 6m x 6m (20' x 20'). Good for making a splash at smaller party, or as porches, chill-out areas etc at larger events.
  • Stretch tents: Eye catching shape and good for fixing on all different surfaces, stretch tents are incredibly flexible and can morph into different shapes to suit your space.
  • Bell tents: Great for glamping, bell tents are 5m in diameter and comfortably sleep four.
